Written and Re-Written in Walden
The fluid-text edition of Walden follows Ronald Clapper’s division of the text into paragraphs and paragraph segments. For example, “Economy” paragraph 2 is divided into segments 2a, 2b, and 2c. Each segment of what would become paragraph 2 in the published version has a distinct revision history. Segment 2a was first written in version A, then underwent two re-writings in version C. Segment 2b was first written in version B, then re-written (also twice) in version C. Segment 2c was first written in version A, re-written in version B, then twice re-written in version C.
